American singer-songwriter Katy Perry has become our new favourite artist. Hitting the number one spot in the UK on download sales alone, Perry has captured our attention and our hearts with her debut single I Kissed A Girl. The song hit the top of the Billboard 100 in the US and has brought a wave of controversy with it. Perry has managed to upset a variety of religious groups (well done girl!) that claim the lyrics to I Kissed A Girl promote homosexuality.

I Kissed A Girl is a cracking pop track in the style of Rachel Stevens at her best or Goldfrapp at their most playful. The shimmering guitars, heavy beat and catchy-as-hell chorus combine to create one of the best pop songs of 2008. The fact that it's written with Dr Luke, Max Martin and Cathy Dennis only helps to guarantee its hit status. As for the 'controversial' lyrics, Perry merely sings of kissing another girl out of curiosity; hardly rampant homosexuality being forced down a good Christian's throat.

Personally, we love the controversy caused by this song as it highlights the sheer absurd views of religious groups that don't ring true in the 21st Century. If kissing someone of the same sex is so controversial then we wish people would sing about it more often. Katy Perry is our new favourite artist and we can't wait for her album One Of The Boys.
