Despite the year that Britney Spears has been having, her music is still managing to make waves on charts across the world. After a disastrous performance at last year’s MTV VMAs, Spears experienced global success with comeback single Gimme More. The parent album Blackout has managed to sell impressively despite little promotion and with hardly any involvement from Spears at all. Following on from the success of second single Piece Of Me, Spears releases third single Break The Ice.

Against the odds Break The Ice is another strong release for Spears. The track is a cool slab of synth-heavy pop with Spears purring ‘It’s been a while’ at the beginning. If you imagine Toxic stripped back and at a slower tempo then Break The Ice is exactly what you’d get. Break The Ice may not be as instant as Gimme More or Piece Of Me but be warned that it’s a real grower.

So little is Spears’ involvement in her music at the moment that she didn’t even shoot a video for this one. Instead the accompanying clip is animated and very reminiscent of Toxic. The character doesn’t really look like Britney and the music is laid over the top of the animation rather than synced with it.

Break The Ice will likely continue Spears’ success but we long for her to get back to what she does best. We miss seeing Spears pulling off some remarkable performances. Rumour has it that Spears is back in the studio recording a new album as she’s keen to put the bad memories of Blackout behind her.
