Interview: Tom Baxter
Tom Baxter was born in Suffolk and at the age of 19 moved to London to pursue a singing career. After a successful residency at Bush Hall in Shepherd’s Bush, Baxter signed a record deal and released his debut album Feather and Stone. Now promoting his second album Skybound, Baxter is about to release new single Miracle. We caught up with him to talk about the single, his career and his innovative approach to his career.
1. How are you today?
Not bad thanks, been in the studio the last 2 days cutting some new tracks!
2. Tell us about your single ‘Miracle’.
Miracle is a song about those crunch points you hit in relationships, the times when you think you don’t know if you’re going to make through to the next level. You know the 6 month, 2 year and so on markers!
You look for some divine intervention to tell you the way but soon realize that is down to you both to make it happen!!
3. How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard of you?
Cinematic, emotional, lyrical, poetic, dynamic, intense, gentle, heavy, light.
All the colours of the rainbow!
4. What is your favourite song that you’ve written and why?
My favourite song is called Almost There – it hurt when I wrote it but I knew it was helping me to understand where I was and how I had moved on!
5. You offer guitar tutorials on your website. Why did you decide to do that?
Simply because I got so many emails asking when there would be something available to guide them in learning the songs… a lot of it is quite demanding as a guitarist so the tutorials really help!
6. When can we catch you on the road this year?
I will be playing loads of the festivals so best to really check my website www.tombaxter.com. My next tour is in Ireland.
7. What do you think of the male singer-songwriter backlash that kicked in after James Blunt’s success?
Well – I don’t really know? I just write my music and everyone else sticks it into a genre.
8. How was touring with Martha Wainwright?
She’s an inspiring character, in it for the right reasons.
Her brother is a character too! Very good musicians!
9. What’s on your iPod at the moment?
I am listening to an amazing record called The Sea by Bjornstad Ketil and some other folk…. It’s pretty abstract but it chills me out and makes me think of the Cornish Coast!
10. What are your plans for the rest of 2008?
Well I’m touring a lot and doing lots of promotional stuff like European radio and interviews but some point I may just run away to India to enlighten my soul and remind myself what life is all about!
